Naming animals

Someone recently said they thought it was funny how we name our animals.  How can you know who you are talking about if you don't have a name to call them by?  As a young teenager I read all the Trixie Belden mystery books.  Somehow I thought of them when I was naming our goats.  Trixie's best friend in the books was Honey, so Trixie and Honey.  Sometimes other people help us pick out names.  We had four grandchildren with us when we bought three new heifers.  The kids helped pick the names, Oreo, Mattie, and Cheyenne.  Last spring we had family help us name seven new baby calves.  Even Mike's Mom got to help name one.  I asked a group of nurses at work what would be a good name for our new puppy and they came up with Buster.  He is two years old now and Buster just fits him so well.  Now, when it comes to the chickens, it is pretty hard to tell them apart.  We have Henny Penny, who is a small Buff Orington that we hatched out of our own egg.  She is the only one with a name.  Actually, two families had eggs in the same incubator and she was switched by mistake because we have no other Buff Oringtons.  Anyway, we like to name our animals.  That way we can talk about them by name and not just try to get the other person to guess who we are talking about, and we can talk to them by name.
